Teagasc is investigating how farmers in Cavan and Monaghan can contribute to the production of organic fertiliser.
Responding to a question from Senator Robbie Gallagher, Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue said he wants to see the use of chemical fertiliser being reduced.
Senator Gallagher had pointed out that the variety of agricultural enterprises in the local region could provide a more natural alternative.
