The President has led tributes to cervical cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan

The Taoiseach has described Vicky Phelan as as a courageous woman who stood up against the system in the public interest.

The President has led tributes to cervical cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan, who has died at the age of 48.

Vicky revealed the Cervical Check scandal in 2018 after refusing to sign a non-disclosure agreement in a court settlement.

She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2014 after a false smear test result in 2011.

President Michael D Higgins says he was struck by the powerful inner strength and dignity of Vicky Phelan.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has defended the actions of the Government since the Cervical Check revelations, saying action has been taken:
