A Monaghan agricultural economist says the tillage sector could "have a key role to play" in helping the government achieve its climate goals.

Professor Michael Wallace was recently awarded a Nova-UCD Innovation Award for his study on the sector.

The Glaslough native's research revealed that the sector generates €1.3 billion a year and supports 11,000 jobs.

He also says the tillage sector can help the government reach its climate aim of halving gas emissions by 2030.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Professor Wallace explained the carbon footprint involved with the tillage sector:
