Some 16% of people in each counties Cavan and Monaghan regularly volunteer. Helping out at a sports organisation was the most popular type of voluntary work carried out by people in both counties, according to data produced on volunteering by the national census for the first since 2006.
As of April 2022, 10,200 Monaghan people were volunteering in various organisations and their communities. In Cavan, for the same period that figure was 13,000.
A few years ago, Volunteer Ireland lobbied for the inclusion of a question on voluntary work on Census 2022. On February 1st, that work came to fruition as the full dataset on volunteering was published.
