The weather warning is in place from 6pm this evening until 11am tomorrow morning.

A status yellow low temperature and ice warning has been announced for counties Cavan and Monaghan, with sleet and snow expected across the Northern Sound region over the next 24 hours. We are in for the coldest weather this winter over the next few days according to Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show earlier today, Cathal Nolan said that temperatures will drop to minus 5 or even minus 6 over the next couple of nights across the region. It'll lead to difficult travelling conditions, with the cold snap set to last for the remainder of the week. Cathal says the Northern Sound area is in for some sleet and snow for later tonight and in to tomorrow morning.

"As we go into tonight we'll see more general cloud and outbreaks of sleet and snow push in across the region," he explained. "There will likely be temporary accumulations of snow tomorrow morning and into the midday period. At that point mild air will catch up so the snow may revert back to sleet for a time, however this will lead to a particularly challenging situation on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, temperatures will plummet down to minus 5 or 6 degrees bringing icy conditions which will create dangerous driving conditions on Wednesday morning."
