A mastectomy fitter who treats women in Cavan and Monaghan has highlighted the importance of breast health and checking yourself once a week.
Alison McCabe has been a mastectomy fitter for over 20 years and is fully trained in looking after ladies after breast cancer by restoring their shape and confidence.
Alison offers her free service Breastcare by Alison which is approved by the HSE for all ladies and men who have been impacted by breast cancer across Cavan and Monaghan.
While mammograms are free to those over 50, Alison says ideally women should be screened at a much earlier age.
With hopes that this will be changed in the near future, Alison says there's plenty of things that women can do to safeguard their breast health in the meantime.
Alison herself was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.
Six years on and cancer free, Alison is urging people to check themselves once a week as it could save your life.
She told Northern Sound: "People don't realise how much life there is after breast cancer even though nobody wants to be told that they have breast cancer, but of all the cancers it's the most curable, especially if you get in there early.
"Early detection is key so the one message that I want to get out is to say to ladies and to men, even though there is less of a percentage when it comes to men it can happen, so I would say to everybody to please check yourself. Even if it's just once a week, it only take 60 seconds and it can help save your life."
