The organiser of the anti-racism demonstration in Monaghan town is confident social distancing can be maintained.

Lincoln Falana said there’s a difference in what’s scheduled for Saturday, and what took place in Dublin on Monday.

The event is being described as a vigil and a stand against racism across the world.

Although like many events it is influenced by the killing of George Floyd in America, the main organiser Lincoln Falana said it’s to highlight issues closer to home, including Direct Provision.

Health Minister Simon Harris was among those who criticised the crowds at the Black Lives Matter protest in Dublin on Monday, saying it was a clear breach of Covid-19 guidelines.

He also called on any organisers of future events to reconsider, given the pandemic.

Meanwhile the Irish Council for Civil Liberties said organisers of any demonstrations must make sure public health advice is followed, and suggested looking at other ways, such as online protests, to express their views at this time.

However, Lincoln says there will be stewards to make sure public health advice is followed.

The demonstration is set to take place on Saturday at 3pm outside the Courthouse.
