A Co Cavan woman who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer is sharing her story with others to help bring about important change and awareness.
Alanna Kells from Milltown was in the middle of planning for her wedding alongside completing her PHD when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at the age of just 27.
Alanna who is now 28 had no family history or genetic mutations when she received her diagnosis after discovering a lump when she was lying down.
The local woman said it's important for women to regularly check their breasts, particularly when it comes to early intervention and called for the age for breast screenings to be lowered.
As well as this, Alanna is hoping to bring about much needed change when it comes to cancer patients who are in full-time study.
Alana explained because her PhD was funded through a tax-free scholarship, she is not eligible for PRSI-based social welfare payments.
She is currently in the process of applying for disability supports, but in the meantime there are many day-to-day costs that come with cancer treatment.
