A bogey free opening round with a sprinkling of birdies has given Leona Maguire a good start at the Lotte Championship

Leona Maguire has had a steady start to the Lotte Championship in Hawaii over night. The Cavan golfer is currently joint 14th having signed for a 4 under round of 68, 4 off the lead held by American Brittnay Altomare and Yuka Saso of the Philippines. Maguire was early into her stride as she birded her 4th and 5th holes and followed that up with a further birdie on the 8th to leave her 3 under at the turn.  A string of pars on her returning 9 holes was broken with a birdie three from home to confirm the 68 and a bogey free round.

The Joint leaders of Altomare and Saso had a mixed scoring card but still managed to register an 8 under 64. American Altomare began her round with a birdie and went 2 under by the 5th hole before bogeying the 6th, which cost her the overall lead as an incredible 7 birdies on her back 9 ensured she move to the top of the leaderboard alongside Yuka Saso who also opened with a birdie before taking the turn on 3 under and finished her round with a further 5 birdies in 6 holes.

Round 2 gets underway later this evening with Leona Maguire teeing off at approximately 6:30pm Irish time.
