Gowna fight back for Cavan Gaels draw in Cavan SFC quarter-final

Gowna produced a second-half comeback to draw 1-12 each with Cavan Gaels in the first Cavan SFC quarter-finals.

Gaels had led by two points at half-time and with Gowna reduced to 14 men after Ryan Bailey’s red card it looked nailed on for Gaels.

Gearoid McKiernan certainly had his kicking boots registering six Gaels points in the first-half. Declan Meehan free Gaels only other score.

Two Ryan Brady points and one each from Ryan Donohoe, Robbie Fitzpatrick and a Cian Madden free saw Gowna trail seven points to five at half-time.

Brady’s red card eight minutes before the break pointed to a Gaels win. Kelvin Meehan’s lucky goal five minutes after the restart pointed to only one result.

Another McKiernan free four minutes later made it 1-10 to 0-8. However it would be near 20 minutes before Gaels would score again.

Things went in Gowna’s direction when Paul Graham received a black card levelling the game at 14 men each for 10 minutes.

Robbie Fitzpatrick immediately took advantage of a high ball to land a Gowna goal, making it a one point game.

Gowna edged infront with points from Tiernan Madden, Connor Brady and a Cian Madden free. 1-12 to 1-10.

Barry Fortune found Gaels first score in 19 minutes and just their fifth of the second-half.

Two minutes into injury time substitute Evan McIntyre levelled the game at 1-12 each. The sides will meet again in a replay next weekend, weekending September 25.
