Cavan totally outclassed by Donegal

Cavan were knocked out of the Ulster Ladies Senior Football Championship following a heavy defeat to Donegal at Kingspan Breffni Park today.

Donegal led 3-6 to 1-8 at the break before pulling away in the second half to win 6-16 to 2-17. Cavan made the better start and a seventh minute goal from Aishling Sheridan helped them to a seven point lead after 12 minutes.

Two minutes later Niamh Hegarty replied with a goal for Donegal leaving three points between them at the first water break.

The Breffni women only registered three points in the second quarter while Karen Guthrie and Geraldine McLoughlin each scored a goal for Donegal in that period putting them four points clear at half-time.

Cavan scored the first two points after the resumption but would then fail to score for 15 minutes in which time Donegal amassed 1-4, the goal coming courtesy of Niamh McLoughlin in the 43rd minute. Eight minutes later NIamh McLoughlin found the net for the second time stretching Donegal’s lead to 11 points.

Geraldine McLoughlin bagged her second goal and Donegal’s sixth with four minutes remaining before Ciara Finnegan grabbed a late consolation goal from the penalty spot for Cavan in the third minute of injury time.
