Derry overcome Down on penalties to reach McKenna cup final

Derry reached the Dr McKenna cup final by beating Down 3-2 on penalties at Newry after it finished 3-9 to 1-15 at full-time.

Derry led 1-8 to 1-6 at half-time; Padraig Cassidy scored Derry’s goal midway through the first half. Niall Donnelly found the net for the hosts.

Donnelly added his second goal 60 second after the restart and Down opened up a four-point gap seven minutes later when Ceilum Doherty registered another goal.

Derry fought back and Oisin McWilliams restored parity on 49 minutes before the sides traded three points each resulting in a draw at full-time.

Ceilum Doherty and Odhran Murdoch scored penalties for Down during the shootout but conversions from Shane McGuigan, Paul Cassidy and Conor Doherty saw Derry reach the final.
