Monaghan were left to count the cost of missed goal chances as Dublin scored a four point win in Croke Park.
Joe Quigley’s goal seven minutes from time, swung the game in favour of the Dubs as Monaghan have lost their opening three Allianz League games.
The Farney made a lively start playing with the wind in the first-half. Ryan McAnespie and Michael Bannigan prominent for the Ulster side, while Ciarán Kilkenny and Con O'Callaghan kept Dublin ticking over.
Monaghan’s first big goal chance fell to Stephen O'Hanlon, but he shot straight at Dublin goalkeeper Evan Comerford. Comerford was called into action again midway through the half, producing two sharp saves to deny Ryan McAnespie and Oisín O’Loughlin.
A superb two-pointer from Dessie Ward edged Monaghan in front on 26 minutes but the Dubs fought back. Aaron Carey levelled matters late on to leave it seven points apiece at half-time.
Monaghan seized control in the third quarter. Ward and Bannigan added fine scores, while goalkeeper Rory Beggan converted a two-point free to stretch the lead to three.
Andrew Woods and Carey were also on target as Monaghan built momentum. When Beggan added a 45, the Farney men were four clear.
However, the Dubs responded well. Man-of-the-match, O’Callaghan struck a crucial two-pointer; Dublin’s first of the evening. Indeed, Sean Bugler nudged the hosts back in front entering the final quarter.
With just over seven minutes remaining and Monaghan leading 0-16 to 0-15, the game swung decisively.
A turnover at midfield allowed Dublin to break, Joe Quigley rifled the ball to the net to hand the Dubs a two-point advantage.
Con the man as Dubs come back
Monaghan responded through Carey to narrow the gap, but another O’Callaghan score pushed Dublin three clear.
Crucially, Monaghan’s final goal opportunity, Bannigan’s half-volley after good work from Carey, drifted agonisingly wide. It summed up a frustrating evening in front of goal for the Ulster side.
A late insurance point from Greg McEneaney sealed the win as Dublin managed possession expertly in the closing stages.
Dublin winning out 1-18 to 17 points.
