Inniskeen open Monaghan Championship campaign in style

Inniskeen produce excellent opening to down Ballybay

Inniskeen opened the Monaghan senior championship with an 11-point victory over Ballybay Pearse Brothers.

Sean and Conor Jones starred throughout with the home side producing a dominant first-half showing.

The hosts got off to a dream start when Andrew Woods raised the Orange flag, opening the scoring with his two-point effort.

Christopher McGuiness responded for Ballybay with a point of his own before Inniskeen took control of the contest. A Conor Jones goal after 10 minutes set the scene as for what was to follow.

Conor McNulty and Conor Monaghan traded points as Inniskeen led 1-4 to two-minutes on 14 minutes.

Andrew Woods stuck again for the hosts, this time with a goal before Inniskeen added three points through Conor Jones and Gareth Burns.

Ballybay did hit a purple patch of their own towards the closing stages of the first-half. Landing three consecutive points coming through Thomas Kerr, Colm Lennon and Christopher McGuiness.

Inniskeen led by 14 points at half-time

On the stroke of half-time Sean Jones kicked a point before gathering the subsequent kickout and lobbing the ball over Ballybay goalkeeper. At half-time Inniskeen ledby 14 points, 3-9 to four points.

The second-half started in similar fashion to the first, with Andrew Woods registering the first two scores. Thomas Kerr got Ballybay’s opening score of the half after 41 minutes with a free.

Inniskeen were now in a commanding 3-13 to six-point lead. Oisin Monaghan and Sean Jones added further free for the home side as they were now in complete control.

Sean Jones added another free before Ballybay found form in the dying stages of the game. Thomas Kerr registered a two pointer before adding his sides opening goal of the championship.

It was Kerr again who added his second two pointer with what was the final action for the afternoon.

Inniskeen victorious in this opening round fixture with an 11 point win, on a scoreline of 3-17 to 1-12.
