O'Connor becomes the first Irish heptathlon medallist

Kate O'Connor became Ireland’s first track and field World Championship medallist in 30-years taking heptathlon silver.

O’Connor posted five personal bests in seven of the events, overcoming a knee injury to secure silver.

The Dundalk native posted a personal best of 2:09.56 seconds in the 800 metres to secure silver behind gold medallist Anna Hall of the USA.

The 24-year-old becomes the first Irish woman to medal at a major championships in a multi-discipline sport. Whereas, Tom Kiely won Olympic all-around (the predecessor to the decathlon) gold representing Great Britain and Ireland in 1904.

O’Connor is only the sixth Irish athlete to medal at the Worlds, the first since Rob Heffernan 12 years ago.

Hall took the title with 6881 points. O'Connor's 6714 was a national record, while Taliyah Brooks (USA) and Katrina Johnson-Thompson (Great Britain) will share the bronze medal on 6581.
