Lightning getting ready to strike again

Christina Mc Mahon is set to make a return to the boxing ring after five years away.

The Carrickmacross boxer, who was Irelands first female professional last fought back in 2016 and while she had never formally announced any retirement from the sport, her personal training business along with other commitments had seen her time in the ring limited over the past few years.

With seven wins in nine professional outings, Christina was crowned the WBC Interim World female champion after defeating Catherine Phiri in May of 2015, before suffering defeats to Alicia Ashley in October 2015 and Zulina Munoz in March of 2016.

The Northern Sound Sports desk has been in contact with Christina and she confirmed that she was making a return to the ring in Luxembourg on Saturday night the 5th of June to face an opponent from Hungary.

While the decision to return had been made well in advance of this weekend, the current restrictions around Covid had place an air of uncertainty on whether or not the fight would go ahead.

With clearance been given for it to happen earlier this week, the original opponent pulled out of the card with a new fighter been confirmed at the 11th hour. Christine noted that "she hoped her return to the ring might help others to follow their dreams".

Having used the Covid lockdown as positive to work on conditioning, the Monaghan boxer known as "Lightning" due to her speed in the ring, highlighted that age is no issue and to just keep going".
