Hugh Byrne’s last-gasp goal proved decisive as the Monaghan hurlers opened their Allianz hurling league division 3A campaign with a 2-13 to 1-14 victory over Fermanagh at Clones.

Monaghan led 1-10 to 1-7 at half-time; Thomas Hughes finding the net for the hosts four minutes while Danann McKeogh scored Fermanagh’s goal 15 minutes later.

The visitors moved two points clear on 58 minutes from time while Monaghan were still without a score in the second half. Stephen Lambe ended the drought seven minutes later.

Hugh Byrne levelled the game heading into injury time and a draw looked highly conceivable before Byrne won it for the Farney men right at the death.
