Monaghan minors cant make it three Ulster titles in a row

Monaghan’s hopes of landing three Ulster minor championships in a row came to an end as Derry scored a 1-15 to 15 point win in Healy Park.

Niall Donnelly found the net after five minutes for Derry, the game’s first score and what turned out to the most important score as Derry won by three points.

Stephen Mooney sent over a free for Monaghan, but it was Derry who were in control and led 1-4 to a point with 14 minutes on the clock.

Mooney sent over another free but Derry were in the ascendancy and led 1-8 to three at half-time. Mooney with Monaghan’s third point.

The sides exchanged points with Derry leading by seven points at the second water break.

Two Stephen Mooney points including a free brought Derry back but they responded with scores of their own.

The 2020 Monaghan minor’s rallied in the final minutes with Cian Colon another Mooney free, Nathan Lavey and Dan McCahey bringing Monaghan to just a point off the lead.

Monaghan couldn’t draw level as two Matthew Downey points including a free moving Derry back into a three point lead.

Derry goalkeeper Kian McGonigle stopped a late Monaghan goal chance as Derry landed the 2020 Ulster minor title.
