Monaghan move fast to make Ulster semi-final

Monaghan setup Derry semi-final

Monaghan booked their place in the ulster semi-final, but were made work for it by Cavan.

The farney started stronger, leaving their near neighbours in their trail with five unanswered points from Andrew Woods, Aaron Carey, Dessie Ward and David Garland.

Cavan’s first score of the afternoon came after 12 minutes when Paddy Lynch fisted over.

Dessie Ward kicked the first two pointer of the day on 15 minutes. Moving Monaghan into an eight point lead, leading 0-9 to 0-1.

Two points from Oisin Brady and Paddy Lynch reduced the deficit for Cavan. However, Stephen Mooney responding for the home side in response.

Ciaran Brady and Karl Gallagher landed two-pointers for either side, before Cavan found their best run in the opening-half.

Paddy Lynch, Oisin Brady and Tiarnan Madden kicked three unanswered points bringing it back to a six point game on 34 minutes.

Stephen Mooney had the final say of the half for Monaghan when he kicked a point on the brink of half-time. Monaghan took a seven point lead into the break. Monaghan leading by seven points at the break, 0-15 to 0-8.

The Farney men started the second-half in similar fashion to the first with points from Stephen Mooney, David Garland and Andrew Woods. Which, overpowered a Paddy Lynch effort which opened Cavan’s scoring for the second-half.

Cavan fightback

Tiarnan Madden found the back of the Monaghan net after 48 minutes when he rounded Rory Beggan before finishing to the net.

The response from Monaghan was instant. Points from Michael Bannigan and a 45 from Rory Beggan extended the Monaghan lead to seven after 50 minutes, 0-20 to 1-13.

Paddy Lynch saw his penalty saved when Rory Beggan guessed the right away. The full-forward kicking a point a minute later.

Emmanuel Shehu kicked an excellent two-pointer before Oisin Brady buried the ball to the Monaghan net after 32 minutes bringing it to a three point game, 0-23 to 2-14.

Efforts from Stephen Mooney, Michael Bannigan and Rory Beggan helped Monaghan see out the victory in the closing stages.

Favour Shehu was shown a straight red for Cavan in the closing stages as Monaghan running out seven point 27 points to 2-14 winners.
