Monaghan suffered a first defeat in Allianz football league division one losing 2-10 to 1-11 to Mayo at St. Tiernach’s Park in Clones.

Seamus McEnaney’s men led 1-8 to 1-7 at the half-time break before a superior second-half display saw Mayo record a two-point victory.

The sides were tied at 1-1 apiece on seven minutes; Mayo’s Ryan O’Donoghue finding the net on six minutes before his effort was cancelled out by Jack McCarron a minute later.

Parity was maintained until the half-hour mark before a Jack McCarron point four minutes into first-half injury time separated the teams at the break.

Monaghan remained one point clear until the 48th minute but four minutes later, the visitors led by the same margin when Jason Doherty found the net.

A Conor McManus point was sandwiched by a score each from Conor Loftus and Ryan O’Donoghue thereafter as Mayo held on for a two-point victory.
