New All-Ireland championship format gets green light

The GAA congress has voted in favour the green proposal and revamping the All-Ireland football championship.

Almost 95 per cent of delegates at the GAA congress voted in favour of a tiered All-Ireland Championship. This will see the eight provincial finalists and the next best eight teams based on league standings compete for the Sam Maguire.

Those counties will enter a round-robin stage comprised of four groups of four, with the group winners progressing straight to the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

The second and third-placed teams will vie for the remaining four quarter-final spots.

The 16 teams who don't qualify for the All-Ireland Senior Championship will play in the second-tier Tailteann Cup.
