'Fireworks drive cats and dogs berserk', says Cavan SPCA

'Animals should be indoors and kept as far away from fireworks as is possible'

As Halloween approaches, animals and pets are fleeing their homes and getting lost because of fireworks. Tina Boyle from Cavan SPCA says dogs and cats become terrified by the noise of them.

She told Northern Sound that animal welfare organisations across the region are inundated - over the past two weeks - with frightened animals on the run. Tina pointed to the onus that's on owners to "properly" take care of their pets.

She added that animals should be indoors and kept as far away from fireworks as is possible. "It happens a few weeks before Halloween and for a few days after it while fireworks are still being let off.

"For some animals, fireworks sends them berserk. It's the noise and the fact that they don't know where it's coming from. They will jump fences and break out of gardens that they have never broken out of before," Tina remarked.
