Cavan County Council has passed a motion calling on the Department of Transport to require the mandatory wearing of hi-viz clothing by pedestrians on roads and laneways.
The motion was tabled by Carmel Brady, who says there are a "significant number of pedestrian fatalities" on Irish roads - 15 so far this year.
She noted that there is legislation regarding the use of hi-viz clothing on building sites and says it's "common sense" for pedestrians to wear it.
Councillor Brady added that a person wearing hi-viz can be seen from a distance of 500 metres, but this reduces to 50 metres when someone is not wearing this clothing.
She told Northern Sound that it should be mandatory to wear hi-viz clothing "when you leave the house and are walking on foot":
