A local Cavan group is hosting a pop-up shop to raise funds for the care of cats.
The Kitten Cottage is a non-profit animal sanctuary based just outside Virginia.
The sanctuary performs a trap, neuter and release (TNR) programme, in an attempt to control the cat population.
The pop-up shop will be held on July 12 in Oldcastle Masonic Hall from 11am to 3pm.
Donations can be dropped to the Kitten Cottage, the advise is to call ahead to ensure someone is there to accept donations.
Màire Egan spoke to Northern Sound about the importance of providing this service.
"We do a TNR, trap, neuter and release. So we trap cats, we neuter them, we release them. Since COVID, the cat population has exploded, and the reason being is because at the beginning of COVID, people got kittens and didn't realise those kittens in four months time can have kittens and have can have three sets of kittens in one year. So that can be up to 18 kittens in year from one cat a year. And that's how it's it's this is the worst year we've ever seen for the amount of cats. People are ringing me every day just today, a lady rang and said there was four kittens outside. Last week, we had a phone call from a lady who said there's 40 kittens in her garden."
