112 knives were seized by Gardaí in the Louth-Cavan-Monaghan division last year according to the Department of Justice.
New figures show that number is a reduction on the 2023 figure of 135 and the 2022 figure of 211. In the last 10 years, a total of 1,205 knives have been seized across the region. Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan says that the increased level of seizures in recent years is due to proactive policing. Last year, legislation was introduced which increased the maximum penalty for the offences of possession of a knife with intent to cause injury, trespassing with a knife, and producing a knife to unlawfully intimidate another person, from 5 to 7 years imprisonment.
The maximum penalty for assault causing harm has also been doubled to 10 years
