157 people have lost their lives on Ireland's roads so far this year.

173 people have been arrested on for driving under the influence in the past week.

Gardai conducted a total of 1,380 checkpoints nationwide during that time, where 3,060 speeding offences were identified.

Between the 22nd and 28th of December a total of 173 people were arrested for driving under the influence - 24 of whom were arrested on suspicion of drug-driving.

Inspector Ross O'Doherty, of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau, says each of these offences had the potential to cause accident or injury to others on the road.

Inspector O'Doherty, says in the month of December so far, 76 People have been arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving between the hours of 6am and 2pm.

Officers are once again reminding anyone intending to have a drink over the New Year bank holiday to make alternative arrangements to get home and to avoid driving the following morning.

157 people have lost their lives on Ireland's roads so far this year - an increase of 25 on the same time last year.
