In 1981 the people of Cavan and Monaghan elected Kieran Doherty as a TD who had never set foot in the constituency.

An event is being held in Cavan later to mark 40 years since the death for
former Cavan-Monaghan TD Kieran Doherty.

The Anti-H Block TD died on hunger strike on this day in 1981.

He was elected earlier that summer to the Dáil but never took his seat as he
was in prison in the Maze Prison.

The 25 year old died after 73 days on hunger strike.

Sinn Féin has organised a commemorative event in the Market Square in Cavan
today to mark the anniversary.

It will hear from TD Pauline Tully, MEP Chris MacManus and former Councillor
Charlie Boylan, who acted as election agent for Kieran Doherty.
