Ashling Murphy laid to rest in Co Offaly

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder

Ashling Murphy has been remembered as a woman who lived her short life to the full and who brought happiness to others.

The 23- year-old teacher's funeral mass has concluded in Mount Bolus, Co Offaly and was attended by the President, Taoiseach as well as the Justice, Education and Arts Ministers.

A musical instrument, a hurl, GAA jersey, family photo and book to represent her love of teaching were brought to the alter as symbols of her life.

Ashling's 1st class pupils formed a guard of honour outside the church, while her friends and colleagues performed music throughout the mass.

Bishop Tom Deenihan addressed the congregation and spoke of the importance of respecting one another.

Ms Murphy was killed while jogging along the Grand Canal in Tullamore last Wednesday.

Gardai investigating the fatal assault have arrested a male in his 30s on suspicion of murder.

The man is currently being detained in Tullamore Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
