Almost €93,000 paid in parking charges at local hospitals

The charges have reignited the debate on whether hospitals should charge for parking.

Over half a million euro has been taken in in car parking income last year at HSE hospitals in the Shannonside Northern Sound region.

Nationally the total car parking income for all HSE hospitals in 2020 was €5.2 million .

According to Freedom of Information figures, €539,324 in parking fees were earned by Shannonside Northern Sound Hospitals over the last year.

Midlands Regional Hospitals in Tullamore and Mullingar accounted for the biggest chunk of change locally, with Tullamore taking in €202,754 across 2020.

That's followed by €142,098 paid in Mullingar Hospital Car parking facilities.

Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe accounted for the next highest figure with €76,197 made from the hospital car park.

That's followed closely by Cavan General hospital with close to €70,000 earned from parking fees.

Sligo University Hospital and Monaghan General Hospital recorded the lowest parking income in the region, with between €25,000 and €23,000 euro received from parking fees.

Nationally at the top of the list, nearly €1.3 million was collected in Cork University Hospital.
