The Bishop of Clogher, Bishop Larry Duffy, will celebrate the 50th anniversary - Golden Jubilee - of his Ordination as a Priest this Sunday.
The occasion will be marked with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St Macartan's Cathedral, Monaghan.
Bishop Duffy himself will be the Chef Celebrant of the Mass, at which he will be joined by family members and friends as well as clergy, religious and lay faithful from across the diocese and beyond.
Born in November 1951, Bishop Duffy is a native of Magheracloone, Co Monaghan.
Following his early education at Scoil Íosagáin, Ballynagearn and the Patrician High School, Carrickmacross, he completed his studies for the Priesthood at St Patrick's College, Carlow.
He was ordained by Bishop Patrick Mulligan, Bishop of Clogher, on Sunday 13 June 1976, along with Fr Michael Daly, now PP of Donaghmoyne and the late Archbishop Noel Treanor who was to become Bishop of Down and Connor and, at the time of his death in 2024, Papal Nuncio to the European Union.
Bishop Duffy's ministry has included time spent in Maguiresbridge, Co Fermanagh and then Enniskillen where he was CC from 1976 until 1978, followed by 16 years in Castleblayney and a further 4 in Monaghan & Rackwallace parish. In 1998 he volunteered to serve in the Diocese of Kitui in Kenya as part of the Clogher Mission to that diocese. He served there until 2002. In 2003, he was appointed Parish Priest Ederney, Co Fermanagh where he served for four years until his appointment as PP of Clones in 2008. In 2013 he was appointed PP of Carrickmacross and Vicar-General of the Diocese of Clogher. Pope Francis appointed him to be Bishop of Clogher in December 2018 and he assumed the role at his Ordination as Bishop on 10 February 2019.
He is Chair of the Council for Ecumenism & Dialogue of the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference and also a member of the Council for Mission and the Council for Vocations.
Sunday's Mass and celebration will be an opportunity for people from across the diocese to give thanks for Bishop Duffy's ministry as a priest and bishop and everyone is welcome to attend.
