Yesterday's increase in the carbon tax will only encourage more people to by fuel in Northern Ireland, according to a local supplier.

The tax increased by €7.50 per tonne at midnight, with petrol, diesel and other polluting fuels increasing in price.

It now costs 2 cent more for a litre of petrol, and 2.5 cent more for a litre of diesel.

AA Ireland yesterday said the increase would hit rural Ireland hardest.

And Tommy Sheehan from North Pole Fuels in Cavan said the increase will only encourage more people to buy their fuel in the north:
