Numerous events are taking place across Cavan and Monaghan this weekend to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.

In Monaghan charity LA519 is encouraging everyone to breakfast together on Saturday morning and remember those who have died by suicide while in Cavan, the annual balloon release takes place on Friday at 7:30pm in Shercock.

LA519 was set up by Barry Aughey after his son Luke took his own life in 2019.

The event in Shercock is running for 12 years and was established by Karen Bannon in the aftermath of her brother's death by suicide.

Mr Aughey says his organisation helps young people to talk about their feelings and teaches them how to mind their mental health.

He says the Big Breakfast is about breaking the stigma around suicide and bringing people together to remember loved ones and share their experiences.

"When we set up LA519 a year ago, we didn't want to reinvent the wheel," continued Mr Aughey.

"We felt that we needed to be different and so there are a number of things we did.

"Firstly, we partnered with the National Crisis Line - so if people text LA519 to 50808 they will get instant help.

"It's free, anonymous and help is available 24 hours a day all year round."
