'When it comes to transparency, the onus is on the funeral director'

There have been reports of 'rogue funeral directors' entering the industry in recent times.

Speaking on the matter on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Kingscourt based funeral director, Colm Kiernan - who is a member of the Irish Association of Funeral Directors (IAFD) - said there are "fly-by-nights' in every industry.

He added that consumers know a good service from a bad one.

As a result, he continued, poor services will eventually be recognised.

Mr Kiernan warned that there is no appetite in Government for regulation of the industry.

He said 1the IAFD has been endeavouring for the last 10 years to work with Government on regulating the industry.

"When it comes to transparency, the onus is on the funeral director," added Mr Kiernan.

"It is up to him to inform the family of all the various options and choices that they have.

When you present the options of cremation versus burial for example, cremation is cheaper if you do not have a family plot already."
