A Co. Cavan Senator is asking the Government to consider the proposed tax credit scheme from the Vintners Federation Ireland (VFI).
Aontú Senator, Sarah O'Reilly believes that it would go a long way to supporting local pubs throughout Cavan and Monaghan.
The VFI has warned that rural pubs are facing a massive threat unless the Government acts in budget 2027.
Since 2005, 2,200 pubs have closed their doors across Ireland. In recent years, closures have increased to an average of 128 pubs per year.
According to Senator O'Reilly, rural Ireland has been hit hardest of all, and that communiteis are losing a social anchor.
Speaking to Northern Sound, she explained the situation.
"I'm talking about small rural pubs, that only serve drink. They are in big trouble.
"When I saw the figures, it's shocking. It's sustained and it's all the time," she added.
