CCPC calls for more use of generic school uniforms to reduce costs

The majority of parents support uniforms, according to the survey, but a third feel they're not getting value for money and 41 per cent feel there's not enough choice.

More schools are being urged to allow generic uniforms to reduce costs.

A third of parents feel they're not getting good value for money, according to a new survey by the consumer watchdog. As schools wind down for the year, this report by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission highlights the cost of school uniforms on families. The majority of parents support uniforms, according to the survey, but a third feel they're not getting value for money and 41 per cent feel there's not enough choice. While 75 per cent of schools have at least one item that has to be bought in a recommended shop. The consumer watchdog says costs can be driven up by branded uniforms and exclusive retailers.

It's recommending that more generic items be allowed and says there should be multiple suppliers to encourage competition.
