Cllr Sarah O'Reilly says people living in Cootehill deserve to have a choice on where they shop.

Residents in Cootehill have become more frustrated over delays in the planning appeal process for a new Aldi store in the town.

That's according to local councillor, Sarah O'Reilly who says people living in Cootehill deserve to have a choice on where they shop.

She also pointed out that good competition is important.

Meanwhile, the German discount store says, the planning decision is now 15 months overdue and it is counting.

In a report published last month by Aldi, it was revealed that consumers across Ireland are losing out on savings of €78,333 every month due to the hold over the appeals process.

When the new store was announced, it was hoped the €6.5m supermarket in Cootehill would have opened its door by mid-2023 creating 25 permanent jobs for the town.

Local residents have signed a petition with almost 500 signatures calling for Aldi to be allowed to construct the new retail store in the Co Cavan town with no further delays.

Cllr Sarah O'Reilly made representations for some local residents in recent days to An Bord Pleanala and says the decision is in sight but no date has been given.
