Councillor Smith passed away in mid-January.

Fianna Fáil Members will gather in the Seven Horse Shoes Hotel Belturbet tonight to select a candidate to replace the late Councillor Seán Smith as a Member of Cavan County Council.

Councillor Smith, who passed away in mid-January, in recent years represented the Cavan/Belturbet Municipal District and prior to that the Belturbet Electoral Area.

Seán Smith from Bawnboy was one of the country's longest serving Councillors having been first elected in 1979 and winning seven consecutive local elections. Local TD Brendan Smith said his brother worked really hard for the people of his electoral area and said whoever is elected will have to do the same.
