First pride festival to take place this weekend in Monaghan

The event opens tomorrow evening and it will feature special guest, Oliver Callan.

The first ever LGBT+ Pride event is taking place this weekend in Co Monaghan.

They say the weekend promises a "vibrant, inclusive, and joyful series of events, bringing the local community together to celebrate diversity and equality.

The celebration will begin on Friday evening with the official launch in Castleblayney Library, featuring special guest, Oliver Callan.

Paul Bardin O'Donnell from Outcomers says it's a celebration for all of the community to be involved in.

Outcomers is a social and support group for the LGBTQ+ people in the North East,

The weekend includes a coffee morning at Crafty on Muckno Street, a special production of The Bród, The Bold & The Beautiful at the Íontas Theatre and a family fun day event too.

Paul says it shows visibility, it shows representation, it shows the likes of the scouts who are coming on the day who are doing a Crêpe stand. So there could be a young person, a member of the scouts, who's a member of the LGBT community. It shows that 'I fit in' and it shows 'I belong'.

"The Crafty Coffee Shop are hosting the coffee morning and this shows that this is a safe place for me to go. I might not want to go today, but I know in the future, if I'm on a first date, or if I'm meeting somebody, or if I have something happening, I know that these are all safe people."

Paul says the event is all about community, "It shows community connection, which is really big, and it's one thing that's really coming through from the people I'm speaking to, is everybody's on board with this. For the community, it's for people that live in the in the area. It's not necessarily just for members of the LGBT community. I need to emphasize that this is for that community, to show support and solidarity for the community. Whilst showing younger members of the LGBT community or older members of the LGBT community that we're here we see you, we support you, and remember 'you cannot be what you cannot see', and by being your authentic self, you're being seen."
