Former justice minister Frances Fitzgerald has backed Heather Humphreys for the next president of Ireland.
Ms Fitzgerald ruled herself out of seeking the Fine Gael nomination for the presidency over the weekend.
She had been mentioned as a potential replacement for former European commissioner Mairead McGuinness, who withdrew from the election on Thursday citing health grounds.
Since then the name of Heather Humphreys has been at the top of pile when it comes to a Fine Gael candidate in the presidential election.
Ms Fitzgerald said on a social media post today, “that her great friend and colleague, Heather Humphreys would make a fantastic President.”
Her post went on to say “she’ll be a strong voice for integrity, vision, and unity in Ireland and if she steps forward, she’ll have my full support.”
The party's executive committee is due to meet tomorrow night to set out a new nomination process.
