'Ireland has one of the lowest numbers of police in the whole of the EU'

Meath West TD and Aontu leader, Peader Tobin, has highlighted the difficulties unfolding within An Garda Siochana.

During a Dail session this week he told the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, over 2,100 Gardaí have been physically assaulted over the last 10 years.

He also pointed out that 400 Gardaí have resigned from the force in the last five years and just 24 Gardaí attended Garda Training College in Templemore during 2022.

Deputy Tobin said numbers in the Garda Reserve are collapsing and Ireland has one of the lowest numbers of police in the whole of the EU.

He added that Co Meath has the lowest number of Gardaí in Ireland and there are districts where there was zero detection for certain crimes for the first half of this year.

The Aontu leader told the Minister she was responsible for the safety and protection of citizens and it was a serious matter that required her immediate attention.
