Ronan heads off today for what he describes is a chance in a lifetime opportunity.

It's the case of Virginia in Co Cavan to New Jersey in the United States for one former Cavan minor football player.

23-year-old Ronan Patterson from Virginia has swapped rugby and GAA for American Football after he received a scholarship in the US.

The Ramor United clubman was offered the chance of a lifetime with the prestigious Monmouth University in New Jersey, a Division 1 American Football programme alongside undertaking a master's degree at the university.

Patterson, a former stand-out rugby player with Virginia Rugby Club and Ulster underage squads, saw an advertisement online for kickers in January of this year and began to practise, culminating in being offered a scholarship with the popular college giants.

Ronan heads off today for what he describes is a chance in a lifetime opportunity that he has been afforded.

College football in America attracts huge interest with big crowds attending to get behind their teams.

The Virginia resident says this will be all new to him and playing for a Division 1 team in the US will be something very special indeed.
