Leona Maguire: 'I just try to do my best no matter what it is'

'There is no such thing as an over night success; I have a strong and determined team behind me'

Local golfing hero Leona Maguire is home in her native Co Cavan this Christmas as an honorary citizen of the county.

The achievements of the two-time Olympian who played a starring role in Europe's Solheim Cup victory in September 2022 and become the first Irish woman to win an LPGA tour event were acknowledged at a Civic Reception yesterday evening.

Speaking to Northern sound after official proceedings concluded, Leona said she is currently enjoying time with family and friends but once the festive season is over, her focus will be on next year's tournament.

She says there is no such thing as an over night success and while she may be the one hitting the shots, there is strong and determined team behind her.

Leona added that she always had a steely determination and she boils that down to growing up with her twin sister and the competitive that was evident between them.

"I suppose it's something I always had, growing up with a twin sister we were always competitive. We were always trying to beat each other and it didn't matter whether it was - golf, football, swimming or even school.

That sort of competitive definitely helped over the years; and I just try to do my best no matter what it is
