A motion was brought to the most recent meeting of Cavan County Council in relation to the roll out of a free vaccine to prevent shingles.
Cllr Clifford Kelly called on the HSE to introduce free of charge vaccines to anyone over the age of 50 years of age.
Currently in the UK, over 55 can avail of a free vaccine against shingles.
Cllr Kelly said he knows of people living locally that has suffered very severally especially later in life with the illness.
He highlighted that it costs 500 euro to get the vaccine and the local councillor says that amount may prohibit people from accessing the vaccine. The Co Cavan Councillor had suffered with shingles and knows first-hand that it can be painful and very serious.
He says there is some terrible side effects to the disease. Cllr Kelly is calling on the health Minister to tackle this very serious problem. He is appealing to the Government to do something about this once and for all.
