A local councillor says he's against the re-establishment of town councils.
Town councils were abolished in 2014 by the Fine Gael-Labour coalition as a cost-saving measure, with many being replaced by municipal districts.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin recently outlined his desire to re-establish town councils across the country within the next three years.
Current Cathaoirleach of the Monaghan Municipal District, Seamus Treanor served on Monaghan town council from 2009 until 2014.
Speaking on today's Joe Finnegan Show, Cllr Treanor believes the abolishment of town councils has not hindered local areas and projects when it comes to funding.
In his opinion, town councils got "too parochial." He continued; "For a population of in and around 65,00o we had 20 county councillors and 45 town councillors. For the Clones-Ballybay area 100 votes would get you in but it got so parochial. We had town councillors going around housing estates at different times before meetings, asking people what problems they have which would lead to two hours of talking about a boiler that's not working."
