A Cavan County Councillor is strongly condemning threats made against the family of the Tanaiste.
Simon Harris and his family have faced a number of threats recently, resulting in a major operation at his home in County Wicklow.
Cllr. Winston Bennett raised the issue as a matter of urgency at the recent meeting of Cavan County Council.
He says it's a disgrace that anyone working in political sphere could be receiving threats in this manner.
Cllr. Bennett believes there should be big fines for the people who are engaging in this type of behaviour online.
Speaking to Northern Sound he said he thinks the situation is disgraceful.
"Well I think it's a disgrace and it's not just only Simon Harris, but it's to anyone in the political sphere that's getting threats or even anyone that's working in our council offices or any place else. It should be absolutely wiped out. I think it's an absolutely disgrace that what Simon Harris has to put up with for the last couple of years and it's a new low when you start to pick on the families and pick on children of councillors, TDs, whoever it is. It's absolutely despicable and the problem is it's got so easy now to be faceless and put something up on Facebook and hide behind it and I think that should be that there should be big fines for anyone that puts up hate mail or anything like that."
