Local pig farmers not exempt from new environmental policies

Local pig farmers will be included in plans to develop a more sustainable agriculture sector.

A leading farming journalist has reminded local pig farmers that they are not exempt from environmental policies that are set to be enacted in the 2021 Agriculture Action Plan.

The plan, which was announced yesterday, features 75 actions to further develop a sustainable agri-food, forestry, and seafood sector.

Hannah Quinn Mulligan, from the Irish Farmers Journal, says the Department of Agriculture will look to bring in a four percent reduction in crude protein in pig diets, in an effort to reduce ammonia losses.

Pig farming is an important section of the agriculture sector in Cavan and Monaghan.

While this will be a "knowledge transfer programme" as opposed to a regulation, she told Northern Sound that this highlights that all agricultural sectors will be reviewed:
