While we often picture Christmas as a time for laughter and special moments with family, the reality can be a lot different for those living with domestic abuse.
That's according to Siobhan McKenna from the Tearmann Domestic Support Service for Cavan and Monaghan.
Siobhan says instances of domestic abuse often rise during this time of year.
This can be due to factors like financial pressures, more time at home, alcohol and substance abuse, isolation from social supports and expectations of happiness.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Siobhan said it's important to recognise the signs of domestic abuse:
"If you're in an abusive situation, thinking about safety can feel overwhelming. It's important to Create a Safety Plan, identify safe spaces
in your home where you can escape if tensions rise, plan how to leave quickly if you need to, and pack essentials in a bag (ID, important documents, medication, a change of clothes, phone charger).
"Share your safety plan with someone you trust. Domestic Violence & Coercive Control thrives on secrecy, reach out to friends, family, or a neighbour you trust. Let them know you may need support and have a conversation about how you will make contact with them."
