Local Sinn Féin TD dismisses concerns over internal voter database

The Data Protection Commissioner has written to Sinn Féin over the issue.

A Local Sinn Féin TD has dismissed concerns over an internal party voter database and claims it is something "every political party worth its salt has been doing".

It's understood the personal information of millions of voters is being stored on the database and the Data Protection Commissioner has written to Sinn Fein with a series of questions over its "Abú System".

Matt Carthy says the information is available to every party through the electoral register, which can then be used by political parties to gauge how many potential voters it has in an area.

Deputy Carthy said he'd be "shocked" if other parties didn't have similar systems in place, and speaking on The Joe Finnegan Show he explained how the information is gathered and used:
