A Co Cavan councillor has called for people to be more vigilant when it comes to water safety.
Independent Ireland councillor Shane P O'Reilly said he has been contacted by a number of parents over concerns that there are no lifeguards positioned at lakes across Co Cavan.
While Cavan County Council has statutory authority to look after lakes in Co Cavan along with Inland Fisheries, Cllr O'Reilly noted that there are 365 lakes across Cavan.
As a result of this, he said there is "no way" that Cavan County Council could police them all and it is not within Cavan County Council's remit to actually have a life guard positioned at lakes.
With the current good spell increasing the number of people visiting local lake shores, Cllr O'Reilly says it's down to individual responsibility and that of parents.
Speaking to Northern Sound, the local representative said we certainly don't want to see any tragedies and a little bit of awareness can go a very long way.
He is calling for people to enjoy the good weather but to be more vigilant as a way of avoiding any tragedies or accidents.
