Talks ended without a deal in place.

The country's biggest trade union looks set to call for an immediate and major intervention by the Government to protect the future of Tara Mines.

Talks between SIPTU and management at the Workplace Relations Commission ended without any substantial progress. That's led workers to down tools and cease operations over the proposed temporary closure of the mines with the loss of 650 jobs.

The ICTU's Biennial Delegate Conference will debate an emergency motion on the matter today. SIPTU Divisional Organiser, Adrian Kane says workers are frustrated by the lack of progress at the talks.
